MathUP

Rubicon Publishing

Roles:

Junior game designer

Game artist, animator

Technical artist

I joined Rubicon Publishing as an intern, and was later hired as a junior game designer and game artist. I worked on MathUP, an "online instructional solution" that helps teachers of grades K-8 as well as the students. A part of the toolset is the collection of online educational games, that exercised students' abilities and supplemented their lessons. Not only did I create game-ready art assets for use in the games, but I also designed and pitched numerous games to the editors and directors.

MathUP games were required to run on PC, Mac, and mobile, so instead of a dedicated app it ran on browsers instead. Because they had to run on mobile tablets and phones, UX is a big concern. Buttons had to be big, and text had to be readable. The games were created in Phaser, a HTML5 game framework, and game assets had to be optimized to minimize load times.

Programs used:

Photoshop

Phaser Editor

SourceTree

2Dimensions Nima (skeletal animation)

Samples

Closed Circuit Service

Grade 6 - Order of Operations

Students are tasked with "fixing" or "powering on" the robots, by completing the circuitry. The goal is to make the top statement equal the number given on the monitor by correctly placing the brackets.

ROLE:

  • Artist: produced all art assets

  • Designer: designed and pitched game

  • Technical artist: placed all assets into the scene

Treasure Tracker

Grade 5 - Coordinate Plane

Students search for treasure, guided by a treasure map. The treasure map gives "hints", eventually leading the player to the coordinates of a piece of treasure.

  • Designer: designed and pitched game

  • Technical artist: placed all assets into the scene

Conversion Kitchen

Grade 6 - Unit Conversions

Student practice unit conversions, as well as unit identification (volume versus mass) by baking a funky carrot cake. They must indicate whether they'd use a beaker or scale to measure the ingredients, and then pick the correct unit conversion.
